The time has almost come. The whole season has been leading up to this race; where the best of each section toe the line and duke it out to become immortalized in the NYSPHSAA skiing handbook each season. Below are KZM’s official predictions for NYSPHSAA State Championships.
Grace Mattern, Brighton
Anna Schriefer, Mendon
Anna Wiedmann, Shenendahoa
Emily Atamanchuk, Queensbury
Bailey Gengle, Queensbury
Due to the weather this season and lack of snow out in the western part of the state, it’s looking like States is going to be held at Bristol Mtn: a mostly flat, man-made loop. We’re sure to see lots of laps and some fast skiing.
Considering these conditions, KZM predicts Shenendahoa’s Anna Wiedmann to power through and claim the distance title. However, to be crowned state champion, you must be winning after both the skate distance and the classic relay. While Wiedmann may be able to edge Mattern in the Skate, the margin will not be big enough to hold her off in the classic. KZM predicts Brighton’s Grace Mattern to be crowned NYSPHSAA State Champion.
Scotty Schultz, Lake Placid
Brian Beyerbach, Queensbury
Lauchlan Cheney-Seyemour, Saranac Lake
Mikey Halligan, Spa Catholic
Andrew Warfle, Honeoye Falls-Lima
Unfortunately for these boys, the fight will be for second. With his 5th place at a Scandinavian Cup race in Finland earlier this season, Lake Placid's Scotty Schultz is head and shoulders above the rest (quite literally, too. How tall is that guy?). Expect Scotty to dominate the field and pray he shows a little mercy.
Team female championship will be tight between Section II’s Queensbury and Section V’s Pittsford Mendon. Both teams has posted some great results this season and are looking to walk away with the state title. Mendon pulled off a stunning upset of section rival HFL to claim the team spot, however, KZM feels they won’t be strong enough to go 2 for 2 in championship relays. KZM is going to give the Female Title to Queensbury High School.
This season we have 3 teams competing for 1 male team title. Queensbury out of Section II, HFL out of Section V and defending state champions, Lake Placid out of Section VII. KZM has been intently watch all 3 of these teams all season and realizes this is going to be the toughest race to predict and the most fun race to watch.
If you were to predict the results solely on the KZM state rankings then HFL is the team to beat. Both Q and LP lack a 3rd skier who can contend with HFL’s 3 in the top 11. However, KZM is going to predict Lake Placid’s Scotty Schultz will be able to give his team a huge advantage and deliver the Men’s team title to Lake Placid High School.
