We are now about a quarter of the way through the race season and the NYSPHSAA circuit is heating up! We were expecting to see the first "Clash of the Titans" this weekend at the Queensbury Invy but unfortunately due to the cold weather, QBY was forced to cancel. However, keep your head up and let's recap the first month of the season before the big race month ahead. Below you can see the New York's Top 10 skiers but first some notes about the season thus far:
On the girls side our biggest surprise comes from section 9. Roundout Valley's 8th grade phoneme Isabelle Serrano took the state by storm by racing her way to second place at the Johnsburg Invy, recording a 98.33 speed rating in the process! Since this break through we've only seen Serrano in skate races where she hasn't put up quite as impressive numbers. However, Serrano is one to watch and will surly be a wild card in the classic relay at states.
The big surprise on the boys side resided in section 2. Saratoga's Alex Fragomeni missed out at making the state meet last season in a very strong section. This summer he's obviously put in a lot of work and has moved his way into the top 10 in the state and top 5 in section 2. We've yet to see a classic race from Fragomeni but in this skate year, expect to see him continuing to fight for top spots.
After years of racing under older skiers, the class of 2018 is finally the oldest out on course and they are using their experience to their advantage. 8 of the top 10 on the boys side are seniors this season and they have been letting the rest of the state know it. In section 5, for example, HFL's Ian Thompson is 2 for 2 in races this year. And at the top of the rankings, Queensbury's Brian Beyerbach and Lake Placid's Scotty Schultz are pulling away from the state. Can anybody reel them in? We shall see...
Seniors on the girls side are also letting the state feel their wrath. Queensbury's Emily Atamanchuck and Shenendahoa's Anna Weidmann have been trading the top spot in section 2 all season. As of Jan 5th, they are 2 of 6 seniors in the top 10, along side HFL's Natalie Northrup and Old Forge's Emily Greene.
Aside from a few section 2 races where section 7 and section 9 made the trek to race, we have yet to see everyone in the Top 10 toe the line together. So as we move into January, be prepared to see some big races and maybe even a shake up in rankings...
Thanks to everyone who has emailed, DM'd on social media and reached out in person. All the results, rankings and information (schools, grades, Etc.) would not be possible without you. Your submission of results and other info is what makes this possible. I just have algorithm to calculate the rankings. :)
